It’s our first time back since August 10th, so we decided to share some of our recent listening experiences with everyone. Keep those ears open – one never knows what newly recorded brilliance will reach them.
Pink Floyd – The Endless River (2014)
For all of the hoopla surrounding this release, it was only natural to give a listen to Pink Floyd’s swan song. Twenty years after the Division Bell sessions, this reworked material makes it to market. Richard Wright’s keyboards are prevalent, making it a must listen for us. All in all, a long delayed farewell from a band long gone. Like ambient Space Music? We do too. Recommended.
Foo Fighters – Sonic Highways (2014)
Back from a short hiatus, The Foo Fighters return with a solid release from right down the middle of the modern rock highway. Recommended.
The Mighty Scepters – All Hail the Mighty Scepters! (2014)
Well done R&B/Soul recording from this British band. Engaging and listenable. Recommended.
Royksopp – The Inevitable End (2014)
Newly released by the kings of Norwegian Electro. Looks like we will be listening to this one for a while. Recommended.
Edgar Froese – Stuntman (1979)
The longtime leader and co-founder of electronic pioneers Tangerine Dream released this album in 1979. In 2004, the album was remastered and rerecorded. The original work does not appear on CD other than on the Froese compilation album Solo – (1974 – 1983) The Virgin Years. If you find the original on LP, or have the compilation available to you, give it a listen. As for the remastered and reworked CD… just say NO.
Jack Bruce – Things We Like (1970)
With the recent passing of Jack Bruce, we’ve given his early recordings a heavy listen. Things We Like has always been a favorite. I am still astonished, as I was forty plus years ago, that this is by the bass player of Cream. It also does not hurt that my second favorite guitarist of all time plays on it. Post bop excellence pervades the proceedings. Highly recommended.
Babel 17 – Celeano Fragments (1990)
Re-released on LP, this Post Punk, New Wave, Goth inspired document deserves multiple listens. Play and repeat. Recommended.
Ozric Tentacles – Arborescence (1994)
We love good psychedelia in all of its forms. Oh yes – the term currently used is Psych. Whatever term you choose to use, be it psychedelia, psych, stoner or mind music, Ozric Tentacles do it exceedingly well. This is just one of a number of recordings by OT we recommend. Have fun, and thank us later.
Until next time Boys and Girls, keep those cards and letters comin’, and the music hummin’.
As always, if you think we should listen to a particular recording, send your recommendations to mingus@jazzmanblue.com
Happy listening…
